Robots, Algorithms and Creative Ideas at the Campusferien

During the summer holidays, the Campus holidays at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg offers the children of university staff a varied childcare program right on campus. This year, the robOTTO team is participating for the first time, hosting activities on three Wednesday afternoons focused on robotics, algorithms, and programming.

The children first became robots and programmers themselves. Through a series of small challenges, they discovered how important clear instructions are and how an algorithm works step by step. They concentrated on solving problems, shared plenty of laughs, and supported one another throughout the activities.

Afterwards, the children had the opportunity to program Ronja’s robots on laptops or design their own robot keychains. Along the way, they created many small works of art. We were especially impressed by how quickly even the youngest participants understood the algorithms and put them into practice in creative ways.

For quieter moments, the Magdeburg Public Library also provided us with a wonderful selection of non-fiction and storybooks about robotics and artificial intelligence. Relaxing on cozy beanbags, the children eagerly read and explored the books.

For the robOTTO team, activities like these are a natural part of early STEM education. They spark curiosity, build children's confidence in their own abilities, and inspire new interests. That is why it is important to us to provide children with diverse, stereotype-free opportunities to explore technology, computer science, and robotics from an early age. After all, ideas about activities and future careers begin to develop in early childhood.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the afternoons so far and had an incredible time with the children. Now we are already looking forward to next Wednesday, when we will welcome the final 22 participants of the Campus Holiday Program for another afternoon of programming, crafting, problem-solving, and, above all, having lots of fun together.
